Same ticker, different rails
A USDT balance on Tron and a USDT balance on Ethereum are both denominated in USDT, but they move on different blockchains. The receiving address must belong to the same network as the transfer.
The swap screen names a network for a reason. Matching only the ticker is not enough. Always check both the asset and the network before approving the order.
TRC-20 on Tron
TRC-20 is often used for smaller USDT transfers because it is usually fast and comparatively cheap. It is widely supported by exchanges and wallets, but support is not universal.
A Tron address usually starts with T. Sending an ERC-20 payout to a Tron address is a network mismatch, not a formatting problem.
ERC-20 on Ethereum
ERC-20 is the Ethereum version of USDT. It is widely accepted by DeFi applications and Ethereum wallets, but network fees can be high when the chain is busy.
Ethereum addresses usually start with 0x. If your wallet only supports TRC-20, an ERC-20 payout may not appear there even though the transaction succeeded on Ethereum.
Other USDT networks
USDT also exists on other chains, including BNB Chain, Polygon, Solana, and others. The same rule applies: the network shown in the quote must match the network your wallet expects.
Do not choose a network only because the fee looks lower. Check that the receiving wallet or exchange accepts that exact network for USDT deposits.
How to choose
Start from the destination, not from the fee. If the payout is going to an exchange, open that exchange’s deposit page and confirm the USDT network it supports. If it is going to a self-custody wallet, check the network list in the wallet.
- Match the exact network, not just the USDT ticker.
- Confirm that the receiving service accepts deposits on that network.
- Leave enough of the source asset to pay the network fee.
A transfer on the wrong network can be unrecoverable. If you are unsure, stop before sending and verify with the receiving wallet or exchange.
This guide explains how the interface works. It is not financial, legal or tax advice. Crypto transfers are irreversible; verify the asset, network and address before sending.
